If you have an older home or business, you may need an electrical upgrade to ensure your electrical system can handle your current power demands. Signs that you may need an upgrade include frequently tripped circuits, flickering lights, and outdated electrical panels.

Indicators of electrical failure can be numerous, but some common ones include:

Flickering/buzzing/dimming lights

If you notice any of these happening when you have light(s) turned on, or when using other appliances, it is an indication of a more serious issue with the wiring in your home.

Hot to touch receptacles

Typically, receptacles should be at room temperature and if they feel warm or hot, there in an issue that needs inspection.

Tripping breakers/blowing fuses

These are safety measures built to prevent excess current from flowing through the system. Usually, tripped breakers or blown fuses can be caused due to overload, damage, faulty wiring, or simply because they’re older models.

Burning smell/smoke

If you notice smoke and/or a burning or strange odor when using an appliance, stop using it immediately and unplug it, and seek professional help. Similarly, if you smell burning or see smoke at any outlet(s) do not use it and shut off the power to the outlet(s) and contact an electrician asap. These indicators could lead to a fire eventually and it is important to get this fixed as soon as you find out.

Appliances running roughly

If any of your appliances appear to be struggling to work compared to normal or vibrating, then it could be due to improper maintenance, damaged parts, incorrect installation, or overloading. Getting an inspection can help find the root cause and fix the issue.

Frayed wiring

Frayed or chewed wiring can causes electrical shocks and is a fire hazard and should be replaced immediately by a professional.

Use these signs to detect a problem but do not try to fix it yourself. Instead, contact an electrical professional for assistance.

An electrical emergency is any electrical failure that puts people and/or property at risk due to various reasons such as fire hazard(s), electrical shock, or injury. It requires prompt action from a professional electrician. Common emergency situations include:

  • Frequent breaker trips
  • Burning/fishy smell
  • Power outage
  • Buzzing sound from breaker box/outlets/switches
  • Burning odor from outlet(s)
  • Electrical fire
  • Electric shock
  • Short circuits/circuit breaker failure
  • Outlet/appliance sparking
  • Warm fixtures

Overlooking these signs can lead to serious consequences and it is important to have them checked by a professional electrician.

In Ontario only Licensed Electrical Contractors (LECs) are legally permitted to perform electrical work in your home. Licensed businesses are insured, and general contractors can only do electrical work if they hold an electrical license.

A Licensed Electrical Contractor (LEC) is a business that is legally authorized to perform electrical work in any home, whereas a Certified Electrician in an individual who can be hired by LECs to perform electrical work as an employee.

You can confirm if a contractor holds a valid license here.

Buying an EV is a big decision and there a few considerations before making a purchase decision for every owner. Some things to keep in mind are:

Charging system

There are different types of charging systems available for EVs that are divided into three levels based on their voltage and use. Level 1 and Level 2 are used for home charging.

Level 1 uses the standard outlet (120 Volts) as other household appliances and takes the most time to charge. Level 2 has a faster charging time and has approximately the same requirements as a large household appliance such as a dryer (240 Volts). Level 3 offers the fasted charging time and is solely used for commercial purposes.

Further, all EV charging systems require an electrical permit before installation with the ESA. It must also have been independently assessed for safety by a certified organization, which is indicated by an official Canadian certification mark or label from the relevant agency.

Cost comparison

If you own a fuel vehicle and are thinking of making a switch to an EV, calculate the fuel costs. This can be done by comparing the fuel costs with electricity costs for traveling the average distance in a week or month. You can find the electricity costs for an EV in its manual or online and use this common budgeting method – kWh/100 km (kilowatt-hours per 100 kilometers). This should help you estimate the cost differences between a fuel-operated vehicle and an EV for your average travel distance in a week or month.

Charging stations

Map out the location of charging stations near you or make sure that you have this information handy through an app, for example. Being stranded in an EV with no charge is more problematic than simply running out of gas. Always having this information with you is a good idea before traveling anywhere.

Garage space

You will want to have your charging port and the charging system in close proximity if you plan on installing the charger in your garage. You should also plan out how you will park your EV.

An electrician can help you decide the best spot for installing the charger based on wiring and safety requirements as well as convenience.

Incentives and rebates

Consider any federal and provincial rebates and incentives that might be available for EVs.

Home electrical inspections are often required by home insurance, city regulations, or rental platforms like Airbnb, and are also a smart choice for anyone buying a new home.

After a thorough two hour assessment of the electrical system, the inspector provides a report indicating whether the home meets electrical standards or detailing any defects, along with a repair quote if needed.

The home should be as clear of clutter as possible to allow for access to all electrical elements (plugs, switches, panels, etc.). The owner should also have a list of any electrical issues that they have been experiencing.
